Aren’t these guys the cutest? A new family in love with each other and photographs. Of course one of my favorite combos! I have known Becky for a long time so it was awesome to meet her hubby and the princess of the family. We spent some time capturing this families bond, catching up and playing dress up!
We seriously laughed the entire session. I am not sure who was the funny but the three of us couldn’t help ourselves. Donuts, donuts are quite laughable. These two lovebirds are here for the desert views as long as the Marine Corps tells them so they wanted to opportunity to capture a piece of their story while they are here. It is always wonderful to meet a couple so well connected and that can make each other laugh; laughter truly does give a relationship such a spark. I enjoyed getting to know these two and photographing them
So this family and I have had a long photographic history with one another. I began photographing their story when Maddie was a newborn. We have had many sessions together since, her momma loves pictures! Hilary wanted to do a stylized session so we ran with some great ideas. I ordered 50 yards of tulle and began designing. This was my first session ever where I made all of the clothing that they were wearing. We had plans, great plans. Sunset, gorgeous dresses it was going to be perfection. We also had a two year old. She let us know the moment we attempted to put her dress on that she was the boss. Hilary had already let me know she wanted real; she wanted to tell their story, the one that they are living right here and right now. She wanted all of it. So that is what we did and every image is perfect. Every image has a moment, a memory attached to it and for that I am grateful. I love my job! I love perfect imperfection!

This young man has already begun his adventures, he is simply moving into new ones. As a Class of 2017 Twentynine Palms High School senior Derek has had some eventful things happening this year. Receiving great accolades for his talented play in football he has just begun his baseball season. He will no doubt go far and has already made his parents proud. Congratulations Sutherland family!

So excited to share this family’s amazing story. As a blended family of my own I love to capture others blended stories. And much like our own family this one has a connection that is unique. They have his, hers, and ours; they are no longer together as a couple but they are absolutely complete as a loving family. They choose to love one another no matter the title but because love is more important. Thank you all for allowing me to capture this unique yet wonderful family story!

Meet Kenny! From Twentynine Palms High School Class of 2013 this young man is now Norwich University Class of 2017 and soon to be in transitioning into the Air Force. Life has come full circle in many ways and I am often reminded that as the young adults that I have watched grow up in this community come to me to photograph their newest of adventures. The love, excitement and work that are ahead for these will give them some of life’s greatest joys. Thank you Roberta for having me photograph such an amazing time in your’s and Theron’s love story. Do you exist in your family’s photo album? Do you put yourself in front of the camera with your kids and your husband? Where are the photographs that include you and your parents? How about the best friend? I am a photographer. I can tell you all day long why it is so important for you to exist in images for yourself and those that love you. I can also tell you the many excuses I myself have had for not existing in pictures. I need to lose weight. I am not happy with my haircut. I don’t like my smile. I am not wearing the right outfit. The list could go on for pages I am sure. Let’s take time to reflect though on each of these excuses, do any of them matter to our children, our parents, our spouses, our best friends? They don’t, I promise.
I have realized over the past few years that I too can no longer make excuses, my children, my grandchildren deserve to know I existed through photographs. Someday I want them to proudly and fondly talk about the experience that exists in those images. A single image can bring back a smile, a scent, a forgotten moment and we should be there for that.
After 7 years of photographing other families I have had the pleasure of capturing HUGE moments in other’s lives; weddings, births, graduations and beyond. I have also had the honor to capture families as they prepare to say final goodbyes to their loved ones, as they hope for final memories and photographs that memorialize their connections. Photographs really are a road map that tell the story of where we have been, who was with us and what did that experience feel like. As a professional photographer I of course want you to book those family sessions, make sure to capture your babies when they are little with a professional but I also hope you consider the story you leave behind. The one that your children can lay out on the floor and giggle over, the one that you can tell an entire weekend’s adventures in, the ones that capture your family’s dynamics.

This family and I have been through maternity, newborn, a grandma visit and now as they are preparing to say good-bye to the desert we captured Myla’s 1/2 birthday! As a military family they have many adventures to come but I am so glad our paths crossed here in 29 Palms. And maybe we will meet again ❤
